AWOLNATION Megalithic Symphony Review
Let me start this by saying I'm way late to the party for this album. It was released back in 2011 and the only song I remember hearing was "Sail." It was a cool song, but I never thought to dig any deeper because that was the only song I heard from them. Usually when I hear one good song and nothing else, I assume they will end up with the LaRouxs and Kevin Rudolphs of the world. This week, after watching the video for "Sail" on YouTube, I decided to check out their videos for "Kill Your Heroes" and "Not Your Fault." They have a different vibe than "Sail" but they are super catchy pop tunes. I like super catchy pop tunes. I know a lot of people who proclaim to be into music turn their nose up at pop music. I love it. Writing a good pop hook is hard and it should be acknowledged. These guys nailed it.
This is kind of album you can listen to from beginning to end without being tempted to skip a track. Every song is pretty strong. It reminds me of Fun's "Some Nights" or Fall Out Boy's "Save Rock and Roll" as far as overall strength of the hooks.
I just looked at Wikipedia for the top chart positions and this thing topped out at 84 on the Billboard 200. It should have been a top 10. If you like pop/rock music with catchy tunes, do yourself a favor and get this album. Buy the CD, buy it on iTunes, buy it on Amazon, or Google, but get it. You'll be entertained for hours.
